This past week, I was scrolling through my Facebook. I happened to see a post from my college, Indiana Wesleyan University, sharing a news article from the NY Times. They were so excited, because they were being recognized for their efforts in “Creation Care.” My heart sank.
Before I go further, we should absolutely be good stewards of God’s creation. However, “creation care” is not the same thing. Let me explain. The term is actually disguising something that the average Christian wouldn’t support. It is trying to mask leftist policies and saying that it is a “biblical mandate.”
In 1993, the Evangelical Environmental Network was created “to win average churchgoers to the green cause by leveraging the influence of trusted institutions like Christianity Today and the National Association of Evangelicals. (Basham, Megan. Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda. Broadside Books, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2024.)” This swindled well-meaning Christians into policies that 1) go against a Christian worldview, and 2) aren’t even environmentally friendly. These policies have kept some countries in poverty, while others get rich.
There has been a trend, in the church, of believing whatever we have been told. When someone, who appears to have a following, says we should do x, we generally go along with it. Especially when it is packaged in biblical language. We need to be careful about what, or who, we listen to. We need to practice critical thinking and investigate things for ourselves. Look at scripture, in context.
For the record, the world will not be destroyed by men. It won’t be destroyed because we drove gas vehicles instead of electric (which is worse for the environment, as we have no way of disposing of lithium batteries). The world will end when God decides. There is nothing we can do to stop it. As Christians, we should be looking forward to it in hope, as that is when Jesus comes back. There will be a new heaven and a new earth. Creation will be set right by God alone. Instead of following leaders who want us to think this life is all there is, put your faith in Christ. Trust that God is sovereign over all. Don’t allow fear to dictate what you believe. Ground yourself in scripture and think on your own. “Creation Care” is NOT a biblical mandate. It is a scheme to influence the church.
